My New Media Class so far...

Although an ambiguous term and previously explained, I believe new media is any new innovation in the areas of technology and communication that seek to provide convenience to individual’s lives. For example the radio was once considered a new media until the television came out which replaced radio and became the new media for that period. New media is around us everywhere we look - school, work, cars, and even bathrooms. Some examples of new media of the 21st century include GPS, HDTV, next generation gaming consoles, bit torrents, social networking sites, smart cars, second life, YouTube and many more.

One crucial component of New media is the internet. Computers can be linked to all new media no matter what type of device it is. Without the internet, New media would cease to exist. Many of the New media web 2.0 applications involve the internet and impact millions of people’s lives every day. Sites like facebook, MySpace and twitter would not exist without the internet.

Some examples of new media that has replaced previous innovations are radio to television to Hulu, old style cameras to Polaroid to digital cameras and flickr, Atari, packman, pinball to next generation gaming, taking a date out to the movie theater or going to blockbuster to using bit torrent for all your movie needs and even an old fashioned map to GPS’.

My new media class so far has taught me to think outside the box and come to an understanding that the world is constantly changing and evolving. Whether this is a good thing or not it is up to you. As always, feel free to email me and leave me comments.
